The Waiting Room, or, The Emancipation of Miss Murphy
© 2016 Toned-F Creations
The story is about a group of residents in a retirement home and some of the crazy things they do. The show is full of laughs, some serious moments and lots of songs.
It was originally written for ten characters but circumstances occurred where there were only seven actors available so a rewrite was made and two, sell-out, performances were produced in November 2016.
Only one set is required, representing a ‘quiet lounge’ as part of a retirement home. Miss Murphy, an attractive but extremely shy, middle-aged woman refuses to mix with the others but new resident, Richard Featherstone, known as Ricky Feathers, rock singer sixty years previously, takes an interest in her and gradually she transforms from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan.
CAST, in order of appearance.
Millie: elderly, frail, early dementia.
Dr Jones: Only a few lines (Can be doubled by Richard)
Matron: middle-aged. Kindly and efficient.
Jean: elderly. A bit ‘bossy’, a natural leader.
James: elderly, gay but not ‘camp’.
Connie: sixties, attractive, lively divorcee.
Miss Murphy (Sandy): a dowdy, but underneath, attractive woman in her fifties.
Richard: late seventies. Sixty years previously, as Ricky feathers, had a minor hit record.
The show was written to be accompanied by backing tracks but, if you have a good musical director, and you would like to produce your own accompaniment, I can supply melody lines and chords.
A few of the backing tracks are attached below, so click on each to hear the quality.
